A positive start which culminated in Werder taking the lead was followed by a period before half time in which the Green-Whites completely lost control of the game and conceded three goals within the space of ten minutes. “The period before half time cost us the game. We made big mistakes in all three goals before the break and we cannot allow that to keep happening,” said Marco Friedl after the final whistle. “To have any chance against Dortmund, you have to play well for all 90 minutes of the game,” explained Florian Kohfeldt, who was “extremely frustrated” with the 4-1 defeat.

WERDER.DE sums up the reaction to a disappointing game in Dortmund.

On the game:

Niklas Moisander: “We started the game well, but the period of the match starting with their equalizer until half time was very poor from us. Again, we weren’t aggressive enough. In the second half, we had one or two good opportunities where we could have scored, but on the other hand, Dortmund could have scored more than they did as well.”

Marco Friedl: “We started the game really well and got ourselves into the lead, just like we set out to do. Then we managed to throw it away in no time at all. We wanted to steady ourselves after we took the lead, but we just didn’t manage to do that. It was my fault and I’m very frustrated at myself for that. We lost the game in the period before half time. It was a more balanced game in the second half and we had good chances through Maxi Eggestein and Josh Sargent, along with Davie Selke’s header. But we deserved to lose on balance.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Up until the equalizer we played well. We took the lead and did well in transition and duels. But the phase ahead of the interval was not like that at all. We completely lost our heads. We made big mistakes and conceded a very unnecessary penalty as well, and that cost us the game. Both teams had chances in the second half but overall, I’m extremely frustrated. A game lasts for 90 minutes, not 75. Two of the goals we conceded were pure slapstick, the penalty was totally unnecessary, and the first goal also came following a mistake.”

On the table:

Niklas Moisander: “We’re looking over our shoulders of course. We’re well aware of the situation we find ourselves in. The game against Mainz on Wednesday is massive and we have to be picking up points. Three points are our only goal.”

Marco Friedl: “Wednesday is must-win for us. We’ve lost several games in a row now and that’s often because of mistakes we make ourselves. We know we’re in danger and we have to win at all costs.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “We’re not a bad position in terms of the table, but Wednesday is still very important. There are no excuses. We’re not facing a top-quality team like today and we have to do everything we can to force a win against Mainz. I know my team and we have the character, there’s no doubt about that in my mind. I remain convinced we have enough to stay up.”
