For Tahith Chong, it’s about going step by step. That’s according to Werder’s new signing himself, when asked about his personal goals at Werder Bremen. The 20-year-old has been at Werder’s training camp in Zillertal for almost two days now. Although the loanee from Manchester United seems to have settled in well considering his good mood, he says that getting to know the team and the club is the first step.

If he manages to do that in pre-season, then Werder’s new number 22 also understandably wants to get some match practice, and most of all on the right wing: “I love the one-on-one situations and dribbling.” The Dutch U21 international names Arjen Robben, as well as Lionel Messi and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, as his role models.

Chong has so far taken part in five Premier League games and six Europa League games for the Red Devils. It’s clear to him why he hasn’t made more appearances: “I didn’t perform as well in those games as I would’ve liked.”

The new Werder player still holds ambitions of playing in big games for the English record champions, and he will be returning to Manchester after his year-long loan ends. But his “focus is now entirely on Werder Bremen and having a good season with the team.” Born in Curacao in the Caribbean, Chong has gotten support in his first days at the club from his roommates Felix Agu and Jean-Manuel Mbom. “They both speak very good English and make me laugh,” he said. “It’s really nice being around them both.” It seems that Chong has succeeded in taking his first step already.
