As usual, the last day of the transfer window was as turbulent as ever. Frank Baumann, sporting director of SV Werder Bremen, sat down on the evening of deadline day to discuss the club’s dealings in the transfer market, Milot Rashica, and the financial constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Frank Baumann on...

...the squad: “We’ve said from the start of the season that we want to build a young, hungry team, and you have to back up your words with actions when you make a statement like that. We have a squad where every position has a back-up, and one that has a number of attacking options. We have a lot of belief in our young players, who just need time more than anything else. The performance of the team will naturally fluctuate, and it’s clear to us that it won’t be an easy season. But as last year demonstrated, it can be tough even with an experienced team. Nevertheless, we’re confident that we can be successful through our approach and hold our own in the Bundesliga this season.”

...departed players: “In Davy Klaassen, we’ve not only lost a top-quality player but also a great person, which is a big shame. He has played a very important role within the club over the last few years, and for that I would like to thank him and wish him all the best for his return to his boyhood club. The other departure is Johannes Eggestein, though he has just left on loan. Over the past few months, he has been getting less game time than before and he needs more minutes under his belt to develop and take the next step. With LASK, we’ve found a club that play in a way that will suit Johannes well. In addition to this, he will gain valuable experience playing in the Europa League against other top European sides. It will do him a lot of good, and it’s the same case with Simon Straudi. Klagenfurt are a club with a lot of ambition and he’ll be able to pick up valuable experience there.”

...Milot Rashica: There's been a lot of interest in him over the last few days from clubs both in and outside of Germany. Milot had already been in contact with Leverkusen for some time, but the talks between us and the club only began on Monday. We took a hard line in the negotiations and did not want to let Milot go for less than he’s worth. In the end, the negotiations over a loan with a possible obligation to buy meant that we weren’t able to reach an agreement before the window shut. If the deal had been right, we would have let him go but as things have worked out, we’re glad to have kept a top attacker here at Werder.”

...the club’s financial situation: “We made the decision on Sunday that the club would not be bringing in any new signings. Our financial situation continues to be a challenging one. The extent to which the club is suffering from the effects of the pandemic has been underestimated by a lot of people. We’re going to have to continue to make savings across the board. However the departure of Davy has enabled us to cover the expenses of last year’s purchase commitments and reduce the amount the club owes.”
