The fact that I was able to spend 12 years in the first team at Werder, after beginning in the under 14s, is a really special thing for me. I would like to thank all the players and coaches at the club over the years (even though none of them managed to get me scoring goals!)
My greatest thanks must go to Thomas Schaaf, who trusted me and gave me the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga. The fans also deserve another huge thank you. An evening game under the lights, ideally with a little bit of rain. For me, there is nothing more beautiful than running out at the Weserstadion in front of you amazing fans, who created a special atmosphere every single time, without fail. I will never forget your support, both for the team and on a personal level.
You supported us through the good times in the Europa League and Champions League, but more importantly in the tough times, such as fighting for Bundesliga status. The game against Frankfurt in 2016 was an amazing moment with you all. I will always salute you for that!
I would have liked to bow out differently - ideally in a full stadium, but unfortunately that’s not possible. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead of me and the new challenges that are around the corner. I feel fit and want to continue my playing career.
After that, my coaching career awaits. I am excited to be able to write another Werder chapter in the future. I wish the team and everyone involved with the club all the best for the new season, and will be following as a fan!
