Ludwig Augustinsson has picked up something of a reputation for scoring at important moments. Last year’s relegation play-off saw the left-back score the decisive goal to keep SVW in the Bundesliga in the fourth minute of injury time. The 27-year-old is still goalless this season but is hoping to change that in the final few matches of the season.

SV Werder’s 2-0 victory against Saturday’s opponents FC Augsburg earlier this season in Bremen came courtesy of goals from both full-backs. While Augustinsson missed the game with a muscle problem, Theodor Gebre Selassie and Felix Agu both scored late-on in the encounter at the wohninvest WESERSTADION to ensure Werder got all three points. “I see it as my responsibility now to contribute with a goal. The last two games of the season would be an ideal time for me to do that,” said the Sweden international on Friday.

An unfortunate own goal against VfB Stuttgart is the only time Augustinsson has found himself on the scoresheet so far. With this in mind, two goals are needed to cancel out the negative ratio: “Two goals against Augsburg would be great,” he laughs. “Normally I don’t get many goals, but the ones I do score are important! That’s what my mother told me at least.”

“I see myself as having responsibility on the pitch”

With 114 appearances to his name in green and white, the 27-year-old has become a key player in Florian Kohfeldt’s team. Augustinsson has missed a total of twelve matches this season, but is back for the final push of the campaign. Augustinsson’s experience and coolness on the ball is very valuable to Werder and is something he hopes to teach the younger members of the squad. “I see myself as having responsibility on the pitch. The younger boys can learn a lot from our current season and it’s up to me to show them how to deal with this situation,” he explained.

Two games are left of the 2020/21 campaign. As he thinks back to the end of last season, Augustinsson is optimistic for the final push: “We performed well at the end of last season and ultimately managed to stay up. There’s a very good mentality within the team this year too!”

SV Werder travel to Bavaria in for their last away match of the season on Saturday to take on FC Augsburg. Kick-off at the WWK ARENA is at 15:30 CEST.
