All football fans might wish for their clubs to do well for their New Year's resolutions, but probably everyone on the Weser wishes for more points. The foundation stone for this is currently being laid by Florian Kohfeldt's side at the training camp on Mallorca, where the first test of endurance against AC Monza is scheduled for Monday at 17:00 CET - even if Werder's coach would not describe the match in such a way. "For me, this is a training match in the truest sense of the word," says Kohfeldt. After the first training sessions, which will be particularly demanding in terms of stamina, it will be all about getting the ball together against the Italians.

WERDER.DE sums up the most important things ahead of the clash:

The opponents: RCD Mallorca were supposed to be Werder's first opponents, but the planned clash between the Spanish first division club and the German outfit was called off at short notice. The reason for this is a postponed match which now makes it impossible for the Spaniards to compete with Florian Kohfeldt's team. AC Monza are hence jumping into the breach and are set to be Werder's first opponents of the new decade. Although the southerners are in the third division, they have big ideals: together with club president Paolo Berlusconi and the commitment of his brother, four-time Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, the club plan to reach Serie A in the next few years, something they have never achieved in their 107-year history. Only in the second division did Monza prove themselves to be permanent guests, with 38 seasons of experience.

A game of basketball

The staff: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt does not expect a top-class game for the first friendly of the new year; in fact, rather on the contrary: "For me, it is a training game in the truest sense of the word. And similar to a training session, all the Werder players will also be involved against AC Monza: "The game is all about teamwork. Nearly all the players will be used." Excluded from this is Fin Bartels. Werder's attacker trained intensively the day before the match, and has therefore been granted a break. "It was more important to us that he trained. He will then be a candidate for our game against Hanover," said Florian Kohfeldt.

Four quarters: SV Werder were forced to not only replace their opponents, but also improvise with match conditions against Monza. Instead of two halves, Werder are emulating a basketball game, and will meet the Italians tomorrow in four quarters of 25 minutes each.
