After a 3-2 win over ‘the Wolves,’ Werder are looking to satisfy their hunger for three points at home. However, the match against last place Paderborn will not be as easy as it might appear. “We need to bring the same level of aggressiveness and desire to win with us into this match,” said Florian Kohfeldt, as he laid out Werder’s approach to what will be the closing game of matchday 14. When Werder take to the pitch against the promoted side on Sunday night (18:00 CET), the team will have to “not let up for a second” and “be clinical.”

The squad: After suffering no injuries during the match against Wolfsburg for the first time in a while, head coach Florian Kohfeldt nonetheless had to make some changes to his side for this weekend. Joshua Sargent will miss the rest of the Hinrunde with a hip muscle strain, and will definitely not be available to face Paderborn. Captain Niklas Moisander’s situation is a bit murkier. Kohfeldt did not want to state whether Moisander will or will not be part of the squad come matchday, but added that things appear “positive.” With the exception of the 37-year-old, who is dealing with a long-term injury, all other players are fit and able to feature.

Kohfeldt: Need to remain highly focused

The head coach on the match: Werder are looking to build on their recent success against Wolfsburg with a win over Paderborn. This will only be the third meeting between the two sides, and Florian Kohfeldt is looking to build on Werder’s strong performances from the past weeks in what is “an extremely important home game.” Although Paderborn are in last place, Kohfeldt warns that the match will by no means be “an easy one.” He added, “We need to bring the same level of aggressiveness and desire to win with us into this match, and need to remain highly focused.” Paderborn have proven that they are able to keep pace with the top teams, as their recent performances against Dortmund, Leverkusen and Leipzig have shown. By virtue of their speed, Paderborn “have been able to make life difficult for even the top teams. We need to make sure we’re awake and be focused,” said Kohfeldt. As in every match, Werder cannot afford to be “inattentive,” in order to secure all three points.

Birthday boy Eggestein’s anniversary

The last meeting: SC Paderborn and SV Werder Bremen have only ever met twice before, when SCP came up in to the Bundesliga for the 2014/15 campaign. Werder romped to a 4-0 win in Bremen, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw in Paderborn later on that season. Izet Haijrovic and Davie Selke both scored to take a point back to Bremen in April 2015.

Maxi’s special day: Sunday’s game at Paderborn will be somewhat special for Werder midfielder Maxi Eggestein. He made his Bundesliga debut for SVW almost exactly five years ago away against SCP. At the age of just 17 years and 356 days, he became just the second-youngest Werder debutant when he was brought on in the 83rd minute. The 22-year-old will also be celebrating his birthday on Sunday, so he’ll be hoping for three points to round off his special day.

The officials: Sascha Stegemann from Niederkassel will be the referee. The 35-year-old will be assisted by Mike Pickel and Frederick Assmuth, while Florian Heft will be the fourth official. Tobias Reichel and Markus Sinn are going to be the video assistants on Sunday night. Stegemann last took charge of Werder on matchday 2, when they lost 3-2 at Hoffenheim.
