Florian Kohfeldt’s side need to prove their bouncebackability after the last-minute defeat at home to SC Paderborn as they travel to Munich to face the record Bundesliga champions Bayern on Saturday (15:30 CET). “There are two ways of thinking for us right now: either we just think things will improve at some point, or we actively start to fight against the things going against us. We are annoyed and want to turn that into positive energy,” said coach Kohfeldt. “Pace” could be the way to cause an upset in Munich.

The squad: SVW may be without midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt, who has been ill this week and only returned to training on Thursday. “Eveybody else is fit and healthy from the Paderborn game,” explained Kohfeldt. The 37-year-old will only be missing long-term absentees Sargent, Füllkrug, Möhwald, Toprak and Bartels at the weekend.

Take advantage of Bayern’s risk-taking

Kohfeldt on the game: Even though FC Bayern have lost their last two Bundesliga matches, Hansi Flick’s side “are still the best team in the league.” The main reason that they failed to win those games was that they failed to make use of their chances against Leverkusen and Gladbach. The way other teams have played against them does, however, show that Werder can take something from the game. “The way they defend is always risky. There will be chances to catch them on the break, but it’s not that easy to get into those situations.” Milot Rashica could be a decisive player with his pace, just as Leon Bailey was for Bayer Leverkusen two weeks ago. “We will think about using that, but it’s not our only tactic.”

Sahin with a good record against Bayern

The last meeting: Werder fans won’t be forgetting the last meeting between the two sides for a while yet. After going 2-0 down in the DFB-Pokal semifinal in Bremen, Yuya Osako and Milot Rashica levelled things with two quick goals, before an extremely controversial penalty gave Bayern the win. The last league meeting also went Bayern’s way (1-0 in the Allianz Arena).

Sahin’s great record: Werder’s midfielder Nuri Sahin has experienced plenty of things during his established Bundesliga career. The 31-year-old isn’t particularly renowned as a goalscorer, although he does seem to know where the net is against Bayern. Werder’s number 17 has netted four times and registered two assists, which is more direct goal invovlemnets than he has ever had against any Bundesliga side. Hopefully he can add to this record on Saturday and hope Werder end their 21-game winless run against Bayern.

The officials: Robert Schröder from Hannover will be the referee. He will be assisted by Christian Gittelmann and Jan Neitzel-Petersen, while Martin Petersen will be the fourth official. Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck and Marcel Pelgrim are on VAR duty.
