SV Werder come up short in 6-1 loss to FC Bayern. The Green Whites lost their lead at the end of the first half after a promising first period and failed to get themselves back into the game in what turned out to be a disastrous afternoon for the visitors. “The belief went out the window after the fourth goal,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said after the final whistle. Werder now need to dust themselves down and look forward to the next one.
Florian Kohfeldt: “Bayern started the game really well in the first 15 minutes and we got quite lucky. Then we started to get into the game more and took the lead. We managed to keep them at bay for a short period after this and Pavlenka played brilliantly. After we conceded the goal we should’ve gone into half time at 1-1. But after that we started to lose our heads. The belief went out the window after the fourth goal.”
Davy Klaassen: “We got undone by two goals in behind the defence. Then suddenly they were ahead. We always want to have a lot of possession, but that’s a difficult thing to do here and you need to be aggressive without the ball.”
Michael Lang: “We weren’t clever enough in defence; we gave them too much space and failed to defend from the front.”
Frank Baumann: "We broke down after they made it 4-1. We let them walk all over us in the final few minutes. We were completely outplayed. That's not something we want to see from a Werder team and we can't let that stand”
Florian Kohfeldt: “We now have two hugely important games left. We need to pick up points so that we aren’t in the bottom three over Christmas. We will see who will be able to play on Tuesday. We need to dust ourselves down and then give everything we have against Mainz and Cologne. It’s a difficult position to be in; we’ve had a terrible Hinrunde. But on Tuesday we are back in front of our fans and I know they will support us.”
Davy Klaassen: “We need to win our next two games against our direct competition.”
Frank Baumann: "The team is under pressure now. We need to do everything we can to win on Tuesday.”
