Werder Bremen have finally earnt their second Bundesliga win of the Rückrunde after a run of eight games without a win. Leonardo Bittencourt’s first half strike ended up being the only goal of the game, thanks to an impressive defensive performance from Jiri Pavlenka and those in front of him. Nevertheless, the win didn’t come without a late scare for Florian Kohfeldt and his side, as Philipp Bargfrede’s second yellow (87’) was shortly followed by what Freiburg thought was the equaliser, only to be ruled out by VAR for offside (89’).

Lineup and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the side that lined up for the defeat against Leverkusen on Monday night. Vice-captain Davy Klaassen was available for selection again, having already served his one-match ban and replaced Philipp Bargfrede in the centre of midfield. Josh Sargent was also brought into the side to lead the line, in favour of Davie Selke.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Veljkovic, Vogt, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, M. Eggestein, Klaassen, Friedl, Bittencourt, Rashica, Sargent

On the bench: Kapino, Groß, Lang, Langkamp, Bargfrede, Bartels, Osako, Selke, Woltemade

Bittencourt scores, Gebre Selassie to the rescue

The highlights from the first half:

8th minute: The first chance of the game goes the way of the visitors. Some nice interplay down the right-hand side ends with Sargent laying the ball off for Davy Klaassen at the edge of the box, however the midfielder’s effort is too central and is easily dealt with by Schwolow in the Freiburg goal.

17th minute: And breathe. Petersen knocks it down for Sallai at the edge of the penalty area, whose snapshot only narrowly misses the far-left corner.

19th minute: GOOAAAALL. 1-0 Werder. Leonardo Bittencourt! The Green-Whites take the lead! Friedl puts in some great work down the left-hand side before giving it to Davy Klaassen who plays a sublime long through ball into the path of Leonardo Bittencourt. Werder’s number ten manages to stay calm and releases a powerful strike into the bottom corner to put his side in front.

26th minute: Gebre Selassie to the rescue! Freiburg surge dangerously towards the Werder goal through Lucas Höler but Gebre Selassie is on the scene to make a goal-saving tackle right at the final moment. Phew!

38th minute: Leonardo Bittencourt is in the mood for goals! The attacking midfielder tries his luck from distance, but his effort travels wide of the goal.

45th minute + 2: Half time in Freiburg. SVW are well worth their lead after an impressive performance.

Werder weather the storm

The highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Friedl picks up the ball 30 yards from goal and drives towards the penalty area with a silky run, but can’t quite find Josh Sargent with his cross and Freiburg manage to clear the danger.

61st minute: Pavlenka is on fire today! Nicolas Höfler’s volley is seen late by the Czech goalkeeper, however he manages to get down quickly and get a strong hand onto the ball to push it away for a corner. Great stop!

85th minute: Freiburg are becoming increasingly dangerous. The recently substituted Kwon finds himself in space inside the Werder penalty area, however his left-footed strike narrowly misses the target.

87th minute: Werder down to ten men. Philipp Bargfrede is sent off. The midfielder is shown a second yellow for a late challenge on Höfler.

89th minute: A huge slice of luck for SVW. Freiburg were celebrating after Gulde stabbed in the rebound after Nils Petersen had struck the post, however VAR judged the former Bremen man to be in an offside position and disallowed the goal.

90th minute + 7: The referee blows the whistle! Three points for Werder!

Match summary: Right from the off, Werder were clearly a much-improved side from Monday night. The Green-Whites maintained a strong hold on possession and patiently worked their way into the opposition penalty area on a number of occasions. Klaassen’s return to the side was noticeable, bringing a level of control to the Werder midfield, which was illustrated through his immaculate pass to set up Bittencourt’s opener.

Nevertheless, the hosts had plenty of chances of their own. Sallai’s early strike (17’) and Gebre Selassie’s fantastic block (26’) were both great opportunities for Christian Streich’s side. SCF continued to heap the pressure on in the second half, with the visitors pushing deeper and deeper. However, overall, Niklas Moisander and Co. defended aggressively and were well-organised, supported by the heroics of Jiri Pavlenka between the sticks. In the end there was no way through for Freiburg and Werder picked up a deserved win on the road.
