What a bitter end to the game. Werder were seconds away from victory against the team fourth in the table, but walk away with just a point after their fifth consecutive Bundesliga draw. The former Bremen man Nils Petersen grabbed the equaliser in the third minute of added time in front of a sold-out WESERSTADION. In the first half, Milot Rashica opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season (9’), before Petersen made things level again in the 28th minute. Theodor Gebre Selassie restored Werder’s lead with a looping header in the 59th minute, but the ten men of Freiburg (Haberer second yellow, 87’) fought back to draw the game at 2-2.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made four changes to the side that lined up for their convincing cup victory over Heidenheim three days ago. Thedor Gebre Selassie and Ömer Toprak came into the side in place of Michael Lang and Sebastian Langkamp. Nuri Sahin was also introduced into the starting XI, replacing Philipp Bargfrede. Kohfeldt’s final change was bringing in Yuya Osako for youngster Josh Sargent, after making his return from injury.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Toprak, Friedl, M. Eggestein, Sahin, Bittencourt, Klaassen, Rashica, Osako

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Langkamp, Bargfrede, J. Eggestein, Goller, Sargent, Pizarro

Petersen replies for the visitors

The highlights from the first half:

9th minute: GOOALLLL! 1-0 to Werder! Milot Rashica! Another goal for the rocket! Yuya Osako cleverly plays Rashica in behind, who cuts inside from the left-hand side before placing it into the bottom right corner.

20th minute: VAR saves Werder. Freiburg have the ball in the net from a set piece, but the video assistant referee cancels the goal out due to a foul by Sallai on Klaassen.

28th minute: Goal. 1-1. Nils Petersen. The visitors equalise. Ex-Werder player Petersen pounces onto a weak back pass and makes them pay.

45th minute + 3: Half time in Bremen. Chances for both sides in the closing minutes of the half but the score stays at 1-1.

Werder fall at the final hurdle

The highlights from the second half:

49th minute: Werder hit the woodwork! Gebre Selassie cuts it back for Milot Rashica, who finds Bittencourt at the far post but Flekken manages to push his close-range effort onto the post.

53rd minute: Flekken with another great stop! Rashica skips past Lienhart at the edge of the penalty area but Freiburg’s keeper manages to parry his shot and the Kosovan hits the rebound over the bar.

59th minute: GOOALLL! 2-1 Werder! Theodor Gebre Selassie. Flekken is finally beaten! Rashica turns provider as his cross finds the head of Gebre Selassie, who beats SCF captain Günter in the air, finding the back of the net.

82nd minute: Werder are getting close to another one. Flekken manages to keep out both Eggestein and Bittencourt’s efforts, before Toprak’s header is cleared away in a goalmouth scramble.

87th minute: Second yellow for Janik Haberer. Freiburg down to ten. Haberer catches Davy Klaassen with his elbow and is given his marching orders by the referee.

90th minute + 3: Goal. 2.2. Nils Petersen. Incredible. Günster’s free kick from the right-hand side finds Petersen at the back post, who heads it in from close-range.

90th minute + 4: Another great save from Flekken. This time he stops Davy Klaassen’s header. Werder are running out of time here.

90th minute + 5: Final whistle! That’s a tough one to take for Werder Bremen.

Match summary: It’s so great to see Yuya Osako back on the pitch. The Japan international needed just ten minutes to make his mark, assisting Milot Rashica’s opener. The match was played at a very high tempo, as SCF searched for an equaliser. Despite some effective pressing from the visitors, their equaliser was nothing more than a gift, with Petersen capitalising on Jiri Pavlenka’s fatal error. Werder were the much better side after the re-start and Thedor Gebre Selassie put them on course for their second home victory of the season. However, Nils Petersen and SC Freiburg had the last laugh with their stoppage time equaliser.
