Hard-fought victory in Düsseldorf! Werder pick up a crucial three points in the relegation battle. It was a close battle on Saturday evening but the win was far from undeserved. Werder started the game as the better side, creating one or two early chances, before Fortuna started to gradually find their feet and put the visitors under pressure towards the end of the first half. Werder regained the upper hand after the interval and took the lead through what turned out to be the only goal of the game in the 67th minute. The game was brought to a close with an intense final few minutes, including an injury to Kevin Vogt and a second yellow for Niklas Moisander as tempers were rising.

Line up and formation: From Hoffenheim and straight into Werder’s starting XI. Kevin Vogt was given his full debut in Green and White in his first ever appearance for the club. Florian Kohfeldt lined his team up in a back five, with Moisander, Vogt and Toprak taking up the positions in central defence, supported by Friedl and Bittencourt on the flanks. The classic midfield trio of Klaassen, Sahin and M. Eggestein were also named in the starting XI, supporting the strike force of Milot Rashica and Josh Sargent.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Moisander, Vogt, Toprak, Friedl, Klaassen, Sahin, M. Eggestein, Bittencourt, Sargent, Rashica

On the bench: Kapino, Osako, Veljkovic, Pizarro, Langkamp, J. Eggestein, Groß, Goller and Woltemade.

Werder search for the opener

The highlights from the first half:

3rd minute: Werder with the first chance of the new decade. Bittencourt gets on the end of Nuri Sahin’s cross after a couple of deflections, but his effort goes narrowly over the bar.

11th minute: Fortuna threaten! Morales meets the cross, whipped in from the right-hand side but his header narrowly misses the goal. Wake up, Werder!

13th minute: Hennings with a chance in the box! Kownacki plays in the hosts’ top scorer behind the defence but he can’t quite squeeze it round Pavlenka and into the bottom corner.

17th minute: Almost the opener! Milot Rashica cuts onto his left foot and searches for the bottom corner from the edge of the box, but his well-hit effort goes narrowly wide.

31st minute: Big save from Pavlenka! Morales works himself some space at the edge of the box and releases an effort on goal, but Werder’s number one rises to the task and taps the ball over the bar.

45th minute: Half time in Düsseldorf! Both sides had their chances in what was an even half. Werder started the game on top, but Fortuna gradually began to take the upper hand. The Green Whites just need to be a bit more clinical in the final third!

An intense end to the game

The highlights from the second half:

54th minute: Rashica comes close with his head! Klaassen whips in a superb ball from the right-hand side, finding Werder’s rocket man in the middle of the penalty area, but the Fortuna goalkeeper stoops down to make a fantastic save, denying the Kosovan.

57th minute: It’s all Werder at the moment! Rashica again! The Green Whites have taken control of the game and are raiding Fortuna’s goal. A one-two with Davy Klaassen at the edge of the box puts Werder’s number seven into a bit of space, however the angle is too acute and he is unable to find the back of the net.

67th minute: GOALLLL! WERDER TAKE THE LEAD! Niklas Moisander heads the ball into the shoulder of Kastenmeier, who then deflects the ball into his own net. It’s a slice of luck for Werder but they won’t care! Rashica was the man who played in the ball initially, before Werder’s captain made the all important touch. 1-0!

90th minute + 2: Vogt takes a knock on the head from Bodzek and has to be taken off. Get well soon, Kevin!

90th minute + 6: The tensions are rising here in Düsseldorf. Niklas Moisander is shown a second yellow for his protests.

90th minute + 9: There’s the final whistle! Werder take all three points! YES!

Match summary: It was an even battle in the first half, with neither side managing to get control of the game. SVW came out of the blocks as the better team in the second half and began to gain the upper hand, eventually taking the lead in the 67th minute. The Green-Whites kept their concentration, fought hard and ended the game with all three points. It’s a huge victory for Florian Kohfeldt and his team, and a massive statement in the relegation battle.
