It was a clear win in the end for FCB. Werder eventually fall to a 6-1 defeat against the record champions after a promising first half. A sold-out Allianz Arena watched on as Milot Rashica sent SVW into an early lead with a fantastic solo effort (24’). However, a quick-fire double from the hosts shortly before the break completely turned the game on its head (Coutinho 45’, Lewandowski 45+4’). The champions then turned on the style in the second half, securing a convincing victory over the Green Whites.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the side that lined up for last week’s home defeat against SC Paderborn. Captain Niklas Moisander was ruled out for the game due to a calf injury and was replaced by Christian Groß in the heart of the defence. Nuri Sahin came in for Philipp Bargfrede who was also out with injury (thigh). Leonardo Bittencourt was dropped to the bench after missing the majority of this week’s training through illness, with Kohfeldt handing Michael Lang his first start since the end of September in his absence.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Lang, Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Groß, Augustinsson – Şahin, M. Eggestein, Klaassen, Rashica, Osako

On the bench: Kapino, Pizarro, Bittencourt, Bartels, J. Eggestein, Friedl, Goller

Coutinho and Lewandowski turn it around

The highlights from the first half:

5th minute: Bayern are getting closer. Pavard whips the ball into the box from the right hand side, finding Serge Gnabry but the winger can’t keep his header down.

14th minute: Pavlenka is on fire today! Werder’s so-called ‘octopus’ shows of his reflexes with a fantastic pin-point save to deny Lewandowski the opener.

24th minute: GOOAAALLLL. MILOT RASHICA. 1-0! What a goal! Klaassen fizzes the ball into Rashica in the middle of the pitch, who then carries the ball forward magnificently, shaking off Jerome Boateng before launching the ball past Manuel Neuer and into the Bayern net. Werder lead!

37th minute: Another slick counter-attack from the Green Whites. This time Rashica picks up the ball from the left hand side and cuts inside but his effort travels narrowly wide. Good chance for the visitors.

39th minute: Incredible save by Pavlenka! Lewandowski finds himself through on goal but Pavlenka comes out and makes himself big to deny the Polish striker once again.

45th minute: Goal. 1-1. Philippe Coutinho. Heartbreak for Werder as Bayern equalise on the brink of half time. Gnabry manages to beat Augustinsson to get on the end of Kimmich’s pass, before laying it across for Coutinho to tap home. To make matters worse, Gebre Selassie picks up an injury in the process and has to be replaced.

45th minute + 4: 2-1 to FCB. Robert Lewandowski. How frustrating. Bayern turn the game on its head just moments before the ref blows for half time. Coutinho finds Lewandowski with a pinpoint pass and the Bundesliga topscorer makes no mistake. Half time.

SVW run out of steam

The highlights from the second half:

54th minute: Klaassen plays a brilliant ball through to Rashica, who gets the better of Joshua Kimmich. However the Kosovan can’t get enough power on the shot with his weaker foot and the chance goes begging.

63rd minute: Goal for Bayern. 3-1. Philippe Coutinho. The hosts increase their lead. Alaba’s long ball over the time splits the Werder defence and Coutinho lobs the keeper magnificently. What a goal!

72nd minute: 4-1. Lewandowski. The Poland international plays a neat one-two with newly substituted Müller, before the striker finishes into the corner to grab his second of the afternoon.

75th minute. 5-1. Müller. Bayern are starting to run riot. Müller fires a low shot into the net after some nice link-up play with Perisic and Coutinho.

78th minute: 6-1. Philippe Coutinho. Coutinho gets away from Sahin at the edge of the box before firing the ball into the top right corner to complete his hattrick.

90th minute + 1: Schiri Schröder brings the game to an end.

Match summary: The Green Whites lined up with a flexible five-man midfield to combat FC Bayern’s plethora of speed and creativity in attack. The record champions went on the offensive right from the start and created numerous opportunities within the first 15 minutes, only to be denied by the magnificent Jiri Pavlenka. Nevertheless, Werder were increasingly finding themselves in acres of space on the counter and managed to take advantage of this through Milot Rashica in the 24th minute. Who knows what would have happened if they had managed to convert another one of their chances. Instead, SVW fell to a quick-fire double from Bayern shortly before the break, who then went on to secure a convincing victory in the second half.
