Another defeat for SVW. Despite a brave and determined performance right up until the final whistle, BVB’s attacking power proved to be too much for the Green Whites in the end, securing a 2-0 victory. The first half was largely an even battle, without much between the two sides. Werder made life extremely difficult for the visitors in the opening period, with tactical discipline and a brave mentality, initially keeping Lucien Favre’s side at bay. They continued the fight into the second half, but Dortmund’s attacking quality eventually proved to be too much for the Green Whites, with Zagadou (52’) breaking the deadlock before Haaland secured the victory (66’).

Line up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the side that lined up against RB Leipzig last weekend. The biggest news of the day was Ludwig Augustinsson’s return to the side after recovering from a thigh injury that had kept him out of action since December. Ömer Toprak also came in for the injured Kevin Vogt, with Davie Selke was once again available after serving his one-game suspension. Kohfeldt set his team up in a 5-4-1 formation, with Davie Selke leading the line ahead of a midfield two of Davy Klaassen and Leonardo Bittencourt.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Moisander, Toprak, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Rashica, Klaassen, Bittencourt, Osako, Selke

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sahin, Sargent, J. Eggestein, Friedl and Woltemade

Rain, tactics and fight!

The highlights from the first half:

8th minute: BVB’s first shot of the game. Emre Can tries his luck from 20 yards out, however his strike travels harmlessly over the crossbar.

35th minute: Augustinsson floats in a free kick from the right hand side which is met by the outstretched leg of Ömer Toprak; however the defender can’t quite direct the effort on target.

45th minute: Almost a great chance for Werder. A long ball is played over the top of the defence; however Bürki comes out to meet it and just about gets there ahead of Rashica to clear.

45th minute + 1: Half time in Bremen! It remains goalless in what has been a very cagey affair. Werder have started the game well, keeping Dortmund’s attacking quality at bay. Encouraging signs for Florian Kohfeldt!

Ice cold from BVB

The highlights from the first half:

46th minute: Almost the perfect start to the half for Werder. Bürki’s kick falls to the feet of Leonardo Bittencourt, who tries to curl one in but the Swiss goalkeeper manages to make the save.

52nd minute: The visitors break the deadlock. Zagadou puts Dortmund in front. Werder are undone by yet another set piece. Sancho whips in the corner and the French centre half is there to divert the ball into the net with his foot.

66th minute: Haaland scores. It was only a matter of time. Hakimi bombs down the right hand side, pulling it back for Haaland who smacks the ball past Jiri Pavlenka with his weaker foot. 2-0.

79th minute: Chance for Werder! The Green Whites are refusing to lie down. The newly-substituted Johannes Eggestein receives the ball from Selke and fires an effort on goal, narrowly missing the target.

90th minute + 3: The referee blows the whistle. Dortmund take all three points.

Match summary: A bad result, but a good performance. Florian Kohfeldt’s side kept Dortmund at bay for large periods of the game, with a particularly impressive performance in the first half. However, once again set pieces were the problem for Werder. BVB earned what was a deserved victory over the course of the game, with the better chances coming the way of the visitors. Werder need to keep up the same desire shown throughout the game if they are to get out of the difficult situation they find themselves in.
