Werder Bremen were defeated by 3 goals to 1 away at Borussia Mönchengladbach, who have now extended their lead at the top of the table to four points. The hosts scored two early goals to set themselves on their way to victory in front of 54,000 fans at the BORUSSIA-PARK (Bensebaini 20’, Hermann 22’).  SVW created a number of chances to get themselves back into the game, but failed to find the back of the net before Hermann’s sucker punch in the 59th minute (3-0). Among these chances was a missed penalty from Captain Davy Klaassen (53’). Furthermore, Yuya Osako’s emphatic first half finish was ruled out by VAR due to a foul by Milot Rashica (27’). Leonardo Bittencourt’s goal was a mere consolation in a comfortable victory for The Foals.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt originally wanted to line up with an unchanged side from the team that started in last week’s draw with Freiburg, but was forced to make one change as Ömer Toprak picked up a muscular problem during the warm-up. Sebastian Langkamp replaced him in the side to make his first Bundesliga start this season.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Veljkovic, Langkamp, Friedl, Şahin, Gebre Selassie, Eggestein, Klaassen, Bittencourt, Rashica, Osako

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Groß, Bargfrede, J. Eggestein, Goller, Sargent, Pizarro

Close but no cigar for Werder

The highlights from the first half:

1st minute: Almost a nightmare start for Werder. Lainer whips the ball into the six yard box however Thuram’s close range effort trickles past the post.

3rd minute: What a start to the game! This time Werder go down the other end and Rashica’s snapshot forces a strong stop from Yann Sommer.

20th minute: Goal for Gladbach. Ramy Bensebaini. 1-0. Benes crosses in a free kick from the right hand side of the pitch and Gladbach’s left back Bensebaini beats Gebre Selassie in the air to nod home.

22nd minute: Goal for Gladbach. Patrick Hermann. 2-0. It doesn’t get any better. Ginter’s long ball over the top finds Thuram. Jiri Pavlenka comes out to meet him but fails to get anything on the ball, as it falls kindly to Patrick Hermann who volleys into the empty net.

27th minute: VAR saves Gladbach. Langkamp and Bittencourt do well to evade Gladbach’s press, before Rashica beats Zakaria to the ball in the centre of the pitch. The Kosovan then slots the ball through to Osako who smashes the ball into the back of the net. However, Schiri Steiler rules the goal out due to a foul by Rashica in the build-up, after consulting with the VAR monitor.

32nd minute: Brilliant piece of play by Rashica. He turns the defenders inside out before trying to find the far corner from 18 yards out, missing by a whisker.

45th minute + 3: An action-packed half comes to an end. However, Werder find themselves two goals down at the break.

Klaassen misses from the spot

The highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Rashica almost gets the second half off to a bang! He strikes the ball on the half volley from 20 yards out but Sommer manages to get a hand to it and push it over the bar.

52nd minute: Penalty for Werder! Awarded by VAR! Bensebaini steps on Osako’s foot within the penalty area – Stieler gets the hint from VAR and points to the spot.

53rd minute: Davy Klaassen misses! The captain hits it hard, but it goes straight down the middle. Sommer already chose to dive left, but manages to block the ball with his legs and keep it out.

56th minute: Gladbach go down the other end and almost score two more goals of their own, but Pavlenka manages to stop both Thuram and Plea.

59th minute: Goal for Gladbach. Patrick Hermann. 3-0. Werder lose the ball carelessly in midfield. Zakaria plays the ball through to Herrmann who beats Friedl with ease before cutting inside and finishing into the far corner.

87th minute: Second yellow for Ramy Bensebaini. Gladbach are down to ten after Bensebaini is given his second booking of the afternoon for an unnecessary slide tackle on Bittencourt.

90th minute + 3: Goal for Werder. 3-1. Leonardo Bittencourt. Too little, too late for the visitors. The newly substituted Goller launches a quick counter attack, before Rashica lays it off for Bittencourt to cut inside and finish magnificently into the bottom left corner.

90th minute + 4: The final whistle blows in Mönchengladbach.

Match summary: The match didn’t take long to get going, with both sides having great chances within the first 180 seconds. The visitors set up in a back three of Veljkovic, Langkamp and Friedl. The hosts were filled with confidence and attempted to press SVW into making mistakes. However, once again Florian Kohfeldt’s side were beaten by a set piece. It was largely an end to end affair, with Werder creating lots of chances of their own but just missing that cutting edge in the final third. Hermann’s second goal of the game put the game to bed and made it a relatively routine end to the game for the league leaders.
