Werder leave empty handed after a 3-0 defeat in Leipzig. Once again, the Green Whites struggled to deal with set pieces, leading to two goals for the opposition, dampening their hopes of remaining in the division. “The two goals from set pieces ruined our entire game plan,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said after the final whistle. Their slim hopes of a comeback were then put to bed early on in the second half as Leipzig added a third just a few moments after the interval. “It’s difficult to come back from that when you’re in our position.” explained Sporting Director Frank Baumann after the game.

On the game:

Niklas Moisander: “Leipzig were a class above us unfortunately. We tried everything we could to play football. However, it’s difficult to come back when you give away two such easy goals.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “I’m happy to be back, but we’re obviously disappointed with the result. We struggled to deal with set pieces once again. We need to readdress our defensive work. We didn’t start the game badly until we conceded the goals.”

Davy Klaassen: “We shouldn’t be conceding goals like that. We started the game well and then conceded two easy goals.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We were up against a team who are competing for the title. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we’ve played well against teams like this before. After the two goals from set pieces we just dropped off.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Our performance in the first half was good, despite the two set pieces. That completely ruined our game. In the second half we wanted to take control of the game, but then they scored their third straight away. After that Leipzig limited us to only a handful of chances. It looked as if we didn’t have enough fight, but that wasn’t the case. We didn’t give up without a fight; the stats prove this.

Frank Baumann: “The situation gets worse and worse when we don’t pick up any points. No one expected us to come away from Leipzig with any points. We simply made it too easy for them to score. It’s difficult to come back from that when you’re in our position.

On the current situation:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “The training camp was good for us. We had lots of important conversations. We now need to focus on the upcoming games.”

Milot Rashica: “We need to be braver and play better. No matter who plays, everyone has to give 100%. The team and the club come first. The team spirit is there, but we need to prove that we have character.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We worked intensively in the training camp. But we knew that we wouldn’t just automatically win here. We spoke a lot, pulled ourselves together and now we have twelve important games ahead of us.”

Davy Klaassen: “We spoke a lot with each other in the training camp and worked hard. It was important for the next few months, not just for this one game. I think the training camp has taken us a step forward.”

Frank Baumann: “We will continue working hard to get ourselves out of this situation. There are always ups and downs in the Bundesliga. We’re in a huge down at the moment. But we know what we have available to us and we want to give the team the best possible opportunity to play successful football again.”

On Florian Kohfeldt:

Frank Baumann: “There will come a time when Florian is no longer the Werder coach. But this day won’t be within the next few weeks. We will do everything we can to help Florian get us out of this situation. We’re certain that Florian will find the solution. The boys all believe in him. We are convinced that he will keep us in the league.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It’s more than just a job for me. I’ve been a part of the club for 20 years now so the situation isn’t easy for me to deal with. But that cannot be a factor. Otherwise 80,000 people would deserve to have the job. I need to provide the team with the right solutions, and they need to trust me. I believe than I can do it. And those in charge share that belief, who I’ve known for a long time. No matter what happens, we will still have a good relationship. If myself, the team and those in charge are no longer a good fit, and they need new momentum, then the club is bigger than the individual. But at the moment I don’t feel like this is the case.”
