"It’s not about our personal needs, it’s all about the team’s success," underlined Christian Groß the day after his strong display at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Nevertheless, it came as something of a surprise to see his name on the team sheet. We caught up with the 31-year-old in a live chat on WERDER STROM.

When the Bremen born defender moved to Werder in 2018 from third-tier VfL Osnabrück, he was intended as an experienced player for the U23s. He made 30 appearances for the reserve team in the Northern Regionalliga before Florian Kohfeldt, somewhat surprisingly, brought him into the first team last summer. Even before the ‘corona-break’, the defender impressed with solid performances in what were for him unfamiliar surroundings.

Four months have passed since his last Bundesliga appearance in early February and last night’s game against Gladbach, not that you would notice. ‘Grosso’ played with composure and put in another impressive performance, winning a high percentage of his challenges. Just like before, Werder’s number 36 is taking every Bundesliga appearance as a personal ‘highlight’, without allowing himself to get over-excited: "The tension is entirely positive. I was really excited about playing again yesterday."

One day later, it is clear that the game has not taken its toll on the 31-year-old: "I feel good, I’ve got no problems." So it’s looking good for this coming Saturday’s trip to Schalke, to which Christian Groß has already shifted his focus. "We need to continue as we started against Freiburg and as we ended last night. Then I think we’ve got a great chance of winning against Schalke." Whether he will feature again, is not on his mind: "If I play, I’ll try and help the team as best I can. If I’m on the bench I’ll try to support the team from the sidelines as loud as I can." Clearly, Groß  has the team’s best interests at heart.
