At just 22 years of age, Maximilian Eggestein is by far the youngest player on Werder’s team council. Despite his relatively young age, the home grown talent has over 100 Bundesliga appearances for Werder under his belt and has become an integral part of the team in the last year and a half. In the space of just a couple of seasons, the promising youngster, who got most of his game time as a substitute, developed into a key, indispensable player, even when things don’t go to plan.

On the back of eight winless games, it’s not just temperatures that have taken a downward turn at the Weser. One look at the table tells you everything you need to know, and Maximilian Eggestein is well aware of the situation. Werder’s midfield all-rounder has played in eleven of Werder’s twelve league games so far this season and issues a warning: "It’s a dangerous situation. Every team down at the bottom of the table can pick up points at any time. We saw that last Sunday." Eggestein’s short career so far has taught him enough for knowing how to deal with the tricky situation: "It’s part of the game. In the last year and a half things have been going well here, for the team and for me personally. It was never going to stay like this forever."

In the face of criticism, Werder’s number maintains a position of objectivity: "We’ve gone eight games without a win now, so obviously not everything has gone to plan, but we mustn’t let ourselves overreact at this stage. We have seen that our game plan can work: We just need to implement it properly before going 2-0 down." As one of the official leaders in the team, Eggestein wants to lead his team to that long-awaited win against Wolfsburg. Above all, it is Florian Kohfeldt’s trust that helps him with this: "It’s always good when the head coach is behind you, it makes a player tough."

Eggestein therefore expects to be in the starting line-up again in Wolfsburg, which will be another chance to start returning to his best: "I want to be at that level again, but my personal aims aren’t important right now. The most important thing is that we win," he said. This kind of mentality is what one would expect from a captain-like-figure in the team; putting your personal aspirations to one side for the good of the team. Eggestein emphasised for good measure, that "we cannot let ourselves stop enjoying football. That wouldn’t do our game any good."
