There was an unfamiliar sight on the Werder training ground on Thursday. Michael Lang, who is usually a right-back, is practicing on the left side of the defence. It’s not necessarily going to become a habit for the Swiss man but for now it’s happening. "It’s like when you drive a car in London, it’s unusual at first," he said. "I'm right-back, that's where my strengths lie." But the 28-year-old knows he must do what’s best for the team. "In the end, the coach makes the decisions and if I'm needed elsewhere, I'll play there too."

Used as and when needed – something Lang is used to now. To give your all for the team during the week but still only watch from the bench at the weekend is never a good feeling, and it doesn’t matter to the Borussia loanee that he will return to this parent club this Saturday. A professional team consists of more than just the starting XI and the Swiss man is fully aware of that fact. "Some players always have to bite the bullet."

Lang wants to prove himself to be a starter in this team as quickly as possible, because he wants to play for Werder. “My statement that I’m happy and want to stay here still stands, and it won’t be changing any time soon.”

In training, the Swiss right-back always tries to give a hundred percent and draw attention to himself. "The team have a couple of players who can play in almost every position." He is aware of the current competition with Theodor Gebre Selassie. Lang admits, however, that there is no reason to avoid competition for the position: "I want to assert myself there in the long term." Dodging responsibility is simply not Michael Lang's thing.
