In a general members’ meeting in Frankfurt on Tuesday, the DFL confirmed their decision to postpone the Bundesliga until 30th April 2020 at the earliest. Representatives of 36 professional clubs in Germany ratified the suggestions of the DFL Presidium. In addition, team training sessions will be prohibited for all clubs until 5th April 2020, in order to comply with decision taken by the federal government.

This decision means that Bundesliga matchdays 28 through 31 will be suspended; including Werder’s home fixtures against Borussia Mönchengladbach (03/04) and VfL Wolfsburg (17/04), as well as the Green-White’s away matches against FC Schalke 04 (11/04) and SC Paderborn (24/04).

The meeting was in total agreement on a further three issues, namely; how to return to a match schedule with the least possible personnel, the founding of a medical taskforce to draw up hygiene guidelines for training and matchdays and lastly, measures to relieve clubs of any licensing and budgetary problems. For example, point deductions due to insolvency will be suspended for the current season.

“All decisions pertaining to the competition should be taken with sport in mind,” explained DFB president Christian Seifert. It is hoped that the current season will be completed by 30/06/2020. In addition, the DFL Presidium will decide how to use the €20 million donation from Germany’s four Champions League clubs.
