The situation in the relegation battle with two games of the season remaining is simple: Werder are chasing survival. According to Leonardo Bittencourt, this position could well be an advantage: "I think it’s easier to chase than to be chased. Since we’ve been in this situation for the whole season, it could help us now at the end."
Away in Mainz, at home to Köln. Three points from both, that’s the aim. "We need to win both games, regardless of what the other teams do," said Leonardo Bittencourt, assessing the table situation. After Matchday 32, Mainz find themselves in the safety zone at 15th, now six points ahead of Werder. Düsseldorf, who are in the relegation playoff spot, currently have a one-point lead on the Green-Whites.
Despite Werder’s tricky situation, Bittencourt is thinking positively about the final two games: "We’ve already done what nobody believed we could. We beat Freiburg and Schalke, picked up a point in Gladbach and improved our goal difference in Paderborn. We’re on a bit of a roll, which has given us wind in our sails. We can look at the remaining two games as two cup finals." A positive attitude, which Bittencourt and his teammates will look to turn into a happy ending.
