Ten days ago, German internationals Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich founded the campaign #WeKickCorona, which aims to collect donations for charity. Since then, several athletes and other public figures around the world have come together to donate over € 3.5 million. Leonardo Bittencourt has also donated to the campaign. Alongside Maximilian and Johannes Eggestein, he is the third Werder player to contribute to the cause. "Josh and Leon are the ones who deserve our thanks. For me it was obvious that I wanted to help," said the midfielder.

The 26-year-old also took the time to recognise those who are working to support others during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. "A huge thank you goes out to all those people who can't stay at home and who are out there helping. We need to respect them by doing our part and staying at home," said Bittencourt.

The midfielder also mentioned how difficult it is for him to not be able to leave his home. As professional athletes, everyone in the team - including Bittencourt - are itching to get back on the pitch. Bittencourt is keeping active by working out and going for runs in the woods, but nothing compares to having a ball at your feet.

However, no matter how much he would like to be back on the pitch, Bittencourt is happy to put his own interests last in the midst of the current situation. Instead of facing off against 11 opponents on the weekend, he lists the mutual fight we are all currently engaged in against a single common opponent. "It's not about football at the moment. It's important to keep the virus from spreading and to protect the vulnerable. If I'm able to help, then I'm happy to put my own interests aside," he said.
