The restart didn't go to plan for Werder. The disappointment was audible from Frank Baumann in the mixed-zone after the 4-1 home defeat to Leverkusen. "We went into this game fully convinced that we could get the win. Unfortunately we couldn't get it done, and today we feel disillusioned," explained Werder's sporting director.

The team acted "too carelessly" at crucial points in the game, warned Baumann. Problems will have to be dealt with quickly with only nine games left in the season. But despite the setback, Baumann is certain: "I am absolutely convinced that we will get back up again." On Tuesday afternoon, he highlighted three positives in the online mixed zone from the wohninvest WESERSTADION:

  • In terms of getting about the pitch, the team did much better than they had done before the coronavirus outbreak. With 123.5 kilometers, the team covered the second most kilometers of all 18 clubs on matchday 26. Only Leverkusen covered 0.7 kilometers more. an impressive statistic, especially since Davy Klaassen and Ludwig Augustinsson, two of the strongest running players in the team, were not available. "That gives me courage," said Baumann.
  • Returnee Philipp Bargfrede made a good comeback until he was replaced before the hour mark. “He is a very important player for us. When he was on the pitch, the team was well-balanced in the game,” praised Baumann. It was actually Bargefrede's first game of the season, and like his teammates, he coped well with the strain. "We are very happy that he will be available to us again in the next few weeks," said Baumann.
  • The team was able to get forward a lot more, but scoring the first home goal after five home games without one ended up being only a small consolation given the result. Above all, effiency and perseverance in the final third made the difference on Monday evening. Davie Selke's missed opportunity in the 63rd minute is exactly the type of chance we said should be taking. Baumann: “We're lacking the final ball. These are the nuances that decide a game."

Baumann knows that SV Werder will have to take those opportunities in the upcoming games against SC Freiburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
