Philipp Bargfrede has had an unfortunate start to the New Year so far. The 30-year-old suffered a calf injury during the winter training camp in Mallorca and has been sidelined ever since. However the midfielder has refused to let his head drop and stayed positive, “It’s important to stay optimistic so that you can come back as soon as possible,” he told WERDER.DE. The long wait is now almost over, as Werder’s #44 returned to training on Tuesday.

Bargfrede could only partially take part in the full training session, but there were positives to take from his first team session in over two months. “I’m feeling really good at the moment and happy to be back. I hope that I can use the next few days of training to bring my fitness back up to scratch,” explained the defensive midfielder.

Despite his eagerness to get back into Bundesliga action, Bargfrede will still need to remain patient for a bit longer, having completed individual sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday. Although he hopes to be back as soon as possible, he must wait until he is ready for the correct workload. “I’ll see how I feel when I return to full team training. I can’t give a specific return date yet,” said Werder’s veteran.

As a longstanding member of the Werder squad, he has experienced both ups and downs during his time as a Green-White. “As a team we are asked to stick together, work as a team and be there for one another. Everyone has to give it their all and perform as well as they can. At the end of the day, results are the only things that matter.”

The Green Whites will hopefully turn things around again, with the help of Philipp Bargfrede back in the squad, who, “wants to give his team a bit more stability with his physicality.” Despite what the table says, it’s by no means a hopeless situation, and optimism will get the team out of this situation.
