There wasn’t much to say after the final whistle. SV Werder are now two points adrift from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the playoff position ahead of the final game of the season next weekend. After Fortuna’s draw against FC Augsburg, the relegation battle will now go down to the final day. “We have to help ourselves,” said Frank Baumann. “As long as it is still possible, we all owe it to the club to give everything we have to stay in the division,” said Kohfeldt after the game.

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “We don’t need to analyse the game too much today; it was possible for us to win here. We had chances and enough opportunities to prevent them from scoring. We didn’t manage to do that.”

Frank Baumann: “I don’t think there’s much to say about the game. I thought we started the game really well. We had good chances, but unfortunately couldn’t put the ball in the net. It sums up the entire season; we conceded goals far too easily. We made it too easy for the opponent.”

Niklas Moisander: “We started well and had enough chances of our own. We didn’t play badly but then Mainz scored two goals clinically. In the second half we made a lot of changes and gave it our all again. We played well in phases, we scored the goal to pull one back. After we made it 2-1 I had the feeling that we would turn the game around. We really wanted to pick up points but in the end it wasn’t enough. We absolutely have to win next week. Of course we’re very disappointed after this game. We didn’t do enough today.”

On the final game of the season:

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt demands his side to fight until the end (Photo: nordphoto).

Florian Kohfeldt: “We had a big chance today. We could have overtaken Düsseldorf. We didn’t manage to do that. It’s now very difficult for us to avoid relegation. But we all owe it to the club to fight until the end, as long as it is still possible.”

Frank Baumann: “The disappointment will last for a few more days but we have to pick ourselves up, and we definitely won’t give up. That’s out of the question. We will go into the last game with everything we have to pull off a miracle.”

Niclas Moisander: “It will be difficult, but we have to win. We will try to score goals. We have to give it our all. The situation is clear: it’s no longer in our own hands. All that matters is that we finally win again at home and try to score as many goals as possible. Then we will see how Düsseldorf do.”
