Midfielder Niklas Schmidt has signed a contract extension with SV Werder Bremen and will spend the next two seasons on loan at VfL Osnabrück, as revealed by director of sport Frank Baumann on Friday.
The 21 year old, who is a product of the Werder youth academy, spent last season on loan at FC Wehen Wiesbaden and made 40 appearances, scoring eight goals and celebrating promotion to the 2. Bundesliga via the relegation playoff.
“Niklas’ season has shown how successful a loan deal can be for all parties,” explained Frank Baumann. “Niklas picked up a lot of game time and made an important step in professional football.” That will be the aim once again for the coming season, when Schmidt will run out for Osnabrück, who won the 3. Liga and will also be playing in the second tier next season.
Niklas Schmidt joined the Werder youth set up as an under-17 player in 2013 and made his professional debut with the club. Between 2016 and 2018, the midfielder made 62 appearances for Werder’s second team in the 3. Liga, and made his Bundesliga debut when he replaced Clemens Fritz against VfL Wolfsburg, assisting Theodor Gebre Selassie’s last minute winner.
