Werder fan Adrian Maleika died 30 years ago as the result of a brick thrown at him, shocking the fan scene throughout the Bundesliga. Sadness and protest appeared on posters as a fan lost their life for the first time since the start of the Bundesliga. The young Bremen native wanted to watch the German DFB Cup match between SV Werder Bremen and Hamburg on 16 October 1982. But Maleika never reached the Volkspark grounds. Even 30 years after one of the darkest chapters in the club's history, Adrian Maleika is still remembered belovedly by friends and many others.

On a dreary fall afternoon, the 16-year-old Maleika travelled to Hamburg for the cup match with members of the Bremen fan club "Die Treuen" ("The Faithful"). The police escorted the Bremen supporters from Hamburg's main station to the S-Bahn stop Stellingen. But a part of the group, including Maleika, got off the train one stop later, in Eidelstedt, where there was no police protection. That was the meeting point of the Hamburg fan club "Die Löwen" ("The Lions"), who were mainly a group of right-wing extremist rockers. They were armed and attacked the Bremen fans on 16 October 1982 with gas pistols and flares. Adrian Maleika, known as a peaceful young man, immediately fled but we struck in the head with a brick. He lost consciousness and died a day later from a broken skull and brain haemorrhaging.

In remembrance, a memorial plaque will be unveiled at Weser Stadium's East Grandstands this Saturday, 20 October 2012 at 4:30 p.m. - two hours before kick-off of the Bundelsiga match between SV Werder and Borussia Mönchengladbach. In addition, NDR and Radio Bremen have recently produced a documentary about the incident and the Fan Project Bremen e.V will show this film on Tuesday 23 October 2012 at 7 p.m. in Weser Stadium's East Curve Hall.
