The disappointment among the Werder players and staff was understandably high following the 4-2 defeat against SV Darmstadt 98. The Green-Whites have now lost their second consecutive away game at newly-promoted clubs, games where they really wanted to build a cushion from their nearest rivals. WERDER.DE has all the immediate reaction after the game.

Head coach Ole Werner: “That was a long way away from how we wanted to play. The half time and full time scores are completely deserved. We didn’t cope with the emotion and intensity of our opponents and didn’t find any moments where we could work our way in to the game. We need too long in games where it is going against us before we find an answer. We have to work on developing this stability.”

Director of professional football Clemens Fritz: “We are all very disappointed. We knew the task that was ahead of us. The performance wasn’t up to our standard for 70, 75 minutes. If you are missing that intensity and speed of passing and then you make a lot of errors overall, it’s just too easy in the end.”

Christian Groß: “We knew that it would be a fiery atmosphere here, but we didn’t manage to get into the game at all. It has definitely not been good enough in the last two away games and we have to change that. We got our foot in the door far too late today.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We weren’t at it from the very first minute, which is inexplicable. It was a deserved loss. If we defend like that, we will lose every game. We showed last week that we can play differently. We knew that there would be ups and downs in terms of results, but there can’t be ups and downs in terms of performance and willingness to put in some running.”

Marvin Ducksch: "When you only start to play football at 4-1 down, then the loss is completely deserved. After a good comeback last week, we are standing here once again having conceded four goals. We analysed our opponents well, but just didn’t make the most of the space that we created. If we concede goals like this then it will be difficult to pick up points in this league.”
