Mitchell Weiser knows that time as a professional footballer is limited. “I’m going to be 29 soon and I’ve only got seven or eight years left in my career if things go well.” After already establishing himself as a regular Bundesliga player, the winger would like to make another dream come true and play at a major international tournament.

As a result of this dream, Weiser is considering changing national team and is hoping for a call-up to the Algeria side. “I’ve always had this as an option in my head,” revealed Weiser to the media on Thursday. “I’ve got the luxury of being eligible to represent two countries. I have a greater chance of playing in a major tournament with Algeria.”

The Cologne-born winger has Algerian roots on his mother’s side and he also speaks a bit of French too. “My father played in France for two years when I was young,” recalled Weiser. “My French was actually better than my German back then, but I’ve forgotten a lot of it now.” Nevertheless, the 28-year-old still speaks one language that everyone does around the world. “Football is a language everyone knows,” said the experienced German. “I’ve never actually been to Algeria and don’t know much about the culture or what it’s like to live there, but I like adventures. I like challenging situations.”

Impress in domestic football for an international opportunity

Weiser’s immediate focus, however, is on his day-to-day life in Bremen and his future with SV Werder. Up next for the Green-Whites is a home game against his former club Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, 12th March (17:30 CET). “I’m looking forward to seeing the lads again. We want to win the game and I’m confident we will.”

The remainder of the season will play a decisive role in Weiser’s future at the club. The 28-year-old and his family are very happy in Bremen right now. “There’s a good chance that I stay for a while. That obviously depends on how the rest of the season goes. My family and I are right at home here and I really enjoy playing for Werder.”
