After a hard-fought match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, SV Werder had to accept a 3-2 defeat. Even though the Green-Whites were “just ahead” in many periods of the game, according to Ole Werner, being clinical in the penalty area made the difference between victory and defeat. Here are the reactions after the game.

Ole Werner: “At the very least it was even, and we were in front in many periods. In the end, not being clinical enough in the penalty area made the difference. We used spaces well and did what we set out to do. In the end, however, we have to say that all of the goals we conceded could have been prevented. On the other hand, there were enough opportunities to score more than two goals. Overall, it was like last week in Augsburg, where we were at least even, maybe even a bit better. But at the end of the day, we didn’t have the quality in the penalty area that our opponents had.”

Mitchell Weiser: “It’s a disappointing evening. There was more in it for us again, and we have to be more intelligent on the pitch. In the last few games, we haven’t played worse, but in the decisive moments we sometimes play like we are children. We always give everything, but you also need a certain level of game awareness. We don’t have that in many situations. We definitely have to improve in that aspect.”

Marvin Ducksch: “We had a good game, but Leverkusen were much cleverer than us. We knew the amount of quality they have, and when you want to compete against a team like that you have to defend better in the box. The goals we conceded could have been defended better. We cause ourselves too many problems and need to cut down mistakes. That concerns all of us, at the back and up top.”

Niklas Stark: “We could have got more from today, just like in the last few weeks. If you don’t reach 100 percent, it’s a shame. Goals like the second one happen from time to time. That’s also a reason why I’m frustrated, if I am one step forward I will block it, but that’s the way it goes. We do see the positives from the game, and if you can get angry because you could’ve picked up points against a top team, then that’s good as a promoted team. You have to look at it as a whole, but I can’t do that so soon after the game and it’s just frustrating.”

Niclas Füllkrug: “There were a few individual problems all over the pitch, in attack and defence, where are always careless and don’t stick to the game plan perfectly. You can’t blame any player for not giving their all or not being committed. These are things that take place in your head. We just have to talk about it clearly and personally. There were often things that we spoke about beforehand. Everyone has to look at their own game and try to bring more quality onto the pitch. What annoys me is that we are now two thirds into the season and certain things keep happening again and again, and mistakes keep happening. It’s something that’s hard to accept. We make it 1-0 and are playing well, but when you’re suddenly 3-1 down and have caused those goals yourselves, it hurts.”
