4-1 loss against St. Pauli

In the match against former Werder players Lennart Thy and Kevin Schindler, head coach Robin Dutt changed his line-up in a number of positions due to players missing on international duty. He had Franco Di Santo in front of the 4-2-3-1 system as the sole striker with Aaron Hunt, Nils Petersen and Eljero Elia in the offensive midfield and Felix Kroos and Mehmet Ekici making up the defensive midfield. Assani Lukimy and Luca Caldirola played together for the first time in central defence with Mateo Pavlovic on the right side of the back line and new acquisition Santiago Garcia on the left side in his Green-Whites debut.
Marcel Halstenberg (3rd minute), Sebastian Maier (24th), Christopher Nöthe (28th) and John Verhoek (69th) scored the goals for St. Pauli while U23 youth talent Martin Kobylanski tallied Werder's only goal in the 51st minute to make it 3-1. Dutt was visibly angered about the clear defeat. "You cannot play like this, especially when you are wearing a Werder jersey. You cannot go just half-speed against a second division team, even if we have trained hard. But this excuse doesn't work today," said Dutt. "This is clearly a disappointment for us. We don't need to talk around this. We wanted to do more, wanted to get some confidence and unfortunately just the opposite happened," said Kroos after the loss.
