2-0 win in test in Essen

After the starters played 120 minutes in the German DFB Cup, Dutt gave his back-ups a fair chance in Essen. U23 player Marcel Hilßner made his professional debut in the 4-2-3-1 system while Felix Kroos was captain for the first time. The team didn't do much in the first 25 minutes at the new Essener Stadium as the newly-formed young Werder group was anxious as they tried to take advantage of their chance.
Werder went ahead with their first chance in the 28th minute as Kroos played a fine ball to Yildirim, who converted to make it 1-0. Füllkrug increased the advantage to 2-0 just seven minutes later with a nice shot. Werder took their 2-0 lead into the break.
Coasting in second half
Not all that much happened in the second half. Werder really didn't offer up any magical football on the night. While Essen celebrated a fine stadium opening, the Green-Whites finished with a 2-0 victory to get some much-needed confidence ahead of their Bundesliga start on Saturday at Eintracht Braunschweig.
