Hamburg remains a good spot for Werder Bremen. The Green-Whites won the semi-final of the LIGA total! Cup 2012 against Bayern Muinch 6-4 (2-2) after penalties to reach the final of the mini-tournament. In a game of two 30-minute halves, Bremen were an equal competitor for the record champions. Nils Petersen (12th) and Niclas Füllkrug (43rd) twice gave Werder the lead while Bayern equalised twice through Shaqiri (27th) and Kroos (59th). The decision came from the penalty spot where goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz twice stopped spotkicks.

Debutant Kevin de Bruyne, who was subbed in after 50 minutes, converted from the spot as well as Mehmet Ekici, Clemens Fritz and Lukas Schmitz while Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger both had their penalties stopped by Mielitz.

On Sunday, 5 August 2012, Werder will take on Borussia Dortmund in the final of the LIGA total! Cup at 6:35 p.m. The German champions had beaten hosts Hamburg 1-0 in the other semi-final of the preparation tournament on Jakub Blasczykowski's goal.
