Andreas Wolf’s goal gave Werder new life but it was not enough in the end.

Two days after being Regionalliga amateur side SV Meppen 13-1, Werder Bremen lost their second test match of the new season, falling 5-4 against Danish top flight side FC Midtjylland Friday night in front of 5,913 spectators at the Sportplatz in Leer-Loga grounds.

Midtjylland, who start their SAS season in nine days, proved a better challenge for Werder, who grabbed a 2-1 lead on goals by Philipp Bargfrede and Lennart Thy. The Danes scored the next three goals to take a 4-2 lead after 66 minutes. New acquisition Andreas Wolf and Clemens Fritz scored within three minutes of each other to equalise at 4-4 with nine minutes left. But Sly Igboun scored his third goal of the match in the 84th minute to decide the game.

Werder were not that disappointed afterwards. "You could see that we were losing power. In the first half we conceded two goals as we were missing the coordination. It was a good test. But the goal is to stand better in the back and we have to work more on that in the coming weeks," said Fritz.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf added: "That was a very, very intensive game which we took on very well in the first half. We saw a lot of mistakes today which led to goals on both sides. There were elements there of the football which we want to see. In the second half we were very tired and did not really go after the challenges."
