Werder Bremen played a poor first half at Saarbrücken's Ludwigspark Stadium. While the Green-Whites continually had errors in their newly-formed 4-3-3 system, Saarbrücken relied on counter attacks. And they had chances by Raffael Korte (24th minute), Serkan Göcer (27th) and Kevin Maek (30th). Werder struggled to find tempo and accuracy in their own game. Mehmet Ekici's long distance shot in the 38th minute was Bremen's only highlight in the first half. Fischer gave the Green-Whites plenty to worry about shortly before the break as the FCS defender hammered home a goal in the 45th minute to make it 1-0 after Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz and Nils Petersen could not clear a free kick.
That meant a winner would be decided in extra time, which Saarbrücken started better with chances in the 96th and 97th minutes. Both teams absolutely wanted to win in the hot temperatures at Ludwigsburg Stadium to reach the second round. Prödl had a header attempt in the 103rd minute as Bremen's best chance. But once again, the hosts scored just before the switch. Tim Stegerer's long distance shot was deflected unluckily by Bremen captain Clemens Fritz past Mielitz in the 105th minute for a 2-1 Saarbrücken lead. That wasn't the final straw as Marcel Ziemer converted a counter attack eight minutes before time to give the hosts a 3-1 victory.
