Kroos for Füllkrug
Werder coach Robin Dutt made one change from the starting line-up in the German Cup loss in Saarbrücken with Felix Kroos starting for Niclas Füllkrug in the 4-2-3-1 system.
Chance for Petersen
A total of 23,325 spectators, including 3,000 Werder fans, saw a first half that lacked in real highlights. Werder had the better start at the promoted side and more possession. The Green-Whites had the first chance in the seventh minute as Clemens Fritz crossed from the right side to Nils Petersen, who shot just wide of the Braunschweig goal.
At the other end, Jan Hochscheidt just missed a header on Werder's goal as one of Braunschweig's few chances. Werder otherwise stood well defensively in the tough match, which did have a lot of tempo. The Green-Whites struggled to create scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes and the match was deadlocked 0-0 at the break.
Werder were close three minutes after the re-start as Marjan Petkovic could not hold a free kick by Mehmet Ekici but Petersen failed to hit home the rebound. Dutt's men were then lucky in the 64th minute as keeper Sebastian Mielitz deflected Ken Reichel's shot off the crossbar to keep the score 0-0.
The promoted team took more control of the match thereafter and pressured Werder's defence more and more. But it was Werder who scored the game's first and only goal in the 82nd minute as Sebastian Prödl punted the ball far out of his own half and Junuzovic latched onto it and blasted it into the Braunschweig goal to make it 1-0. Werder held on and secured their first three points of the new season.
