Joseph Akpala could show off his scoring skills already in the North Derby against Hamburg.

He comes to Werder Bremen having scored 63 goals in 166 matches in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. And Joseph Akpala has been a Green-White since Thursday - and he will be for at least four years. After passing his physical and signing his contract, the 25-year-old took time for a quick chat.

Joseph, SV Werder welcome you to Bremen. Now you are a Green-White. What does this transfer mean to you?
Joseph Akpala: "For me it's a big step in my career. It's a big privilege to be able to play for Werder Bremen. This club is among the big clubs in Germany. I would like to relive the great Bremen times and be a positive influence on the team spirit.

Is it true that you nearly arrived along the Weser two years ago?
Joseph Akpala: "It's true that Werder Bremen were interested in me two years ago. But there is a perfect time for everything. And that is exactly the case now.

With SV Werder, you will have a new head coach in Thomas Schaaf. Have you had the chance to get to know him yet?
Joseph Akpala: "I only know him from afar. I followed the Bundesliga and Champions League on television. He was shown a few times. I read that he has been with the club many years. He stands for Werder Bremen and also conveys the club's philosophy. I like that. It's an honour to be able to work with such a great head coach.

Werder's first home match is against Hamburg. Do you know about the meaning of this showdown?
Joseph Akpala: "It is the game of the year. I already talked to Frank Baumann about it. He told me a lot about the derbies and the special atmosphere. Then I also was told that the first home match is against Hamburg. For all fans, it's the most important game - much more important for example than against Bayern. I am looking forward to it."

It could also be your first game in the Green-Whites jersey. Will you make the fans happy with a goal straight away?
Joseph Akpala: "That of course would be great, the best thing that could happen. But the most important thing for me is positively working my way into the team. We want to win the derby as a team, regardless who scores the goals."
