Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann could not stop Lennart Thy’s shot to make it 1-0 for Werder.

Werder's 2011-12 test match season added another spectacular chapter as the Green-Whites turned around a crazy match in Freiburg, winning 4-3 over Freiburg after trailing 3-1. Lennart Thy gave Werder the lead but was equalised through Daniel Caligiuri before Freiburg pushed ahead 3-1 on goals by Garra Dembélé and Cédric Makiadi. But the substitutes Sandro Wagner and Marko Arnautovic tallied three goals - two by Arnautovic - showing that Werder still have their magic in Breisgau for the test match victory.

Marko Arnautovic cut the margin to 3-2 after going through half of the Freiburg backline. Marko Arnautovic cut the margin to 3-2 after going through half of the Freiburg backline.
"That was the best match of the pre-season thus far. There was a little bit of everything there. In the middle of the first half we didn't really run as much and the opponents gained control of the game and capitalized on our mistakes. We saw that Freiburg can play football. But after trailing 3-1, we started to play football and you could see what was possible," said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf about the ups and downs of the 90 minutes. "We will continue to work on the fine-tuning and have to improve our game. We just gave up goals too easily on defence. We still need support there." The coach gave special praise to Thy. "Lennart has worked very well in the preparations and shown a strong willingness to run. Last season he was just missing the goals. He is ready to go every yard and has gotten back his goal scoring instincts. Lennart has brought himself to the forefront," said Schaaf.
